Human and Environmental Development Agenda receives the report of Federal Government’s part payment of the Ikoyi whistleblower as a welcome development, a giant step towards citizens’ confidence in the battle against corruption and integrity of government.
It would be recalled that following a whistleblower’s hint, staggering sums of $43 million, N23.2 million and £27,800 was recovered from an apartment in Ikoyi in April this year.
First, we commend the government for redeeming her pledge with the part payment. It is hoped that government will maintain the good spirit ignited by this gesture by ensuring that the remaining part of this payment is done as promised.
We maintain that this development is a giant step capable of reinvigorating the fight against corruption. Just as we give kudos to the federal government for this gesture, we equally enjoin Nigerians to also approach the challenge of ensuring that there is no hiding place for questionable wealth possession and loots as the case may be.
Again, this singular gesture by the federal government is a reminder of the exigency and urgency of the need by the National Assembly to expedite action on the passing of the whistle blower bill currently on the floor of the national assembly.
Generally, we call on all Nigerians to take advantage of this development to join efforts with NGOs, CSO groups and associations to ensure that the National Assembly enact the Whistle Blower Protection Bill.
Finally, we seize this opportunity to enjoin Nigerians that it is a patriotic duty to expose fraud, embezzlement, looting of public treasury but such patriotic duty is made more rewarding with the fortune attached by this gesture. The ball no doubt is in the peoples’ court.
